Good morning, Stockton. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Stockton church reported a drop in Holy Week attendance as fewer than one-fifth of its regular congregation attended services—fear of immigration raids kept people away, according to Reverend Nelson Rabell-González of the Lutheran Church of Santa Maria Peregrina. He now offers online services and plans workshops with lawyers to help congregants know their rights if immigration officers visit.  KCRA

CRIME NEWS

  • The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office solved a 43-year-old cold case by identifying Edward Donald Raymond, whose remains were found floating in Beaver Slough in 1981—he would have been 78 today—and the county has created a new Cold Case Task Force to tackle other unsolved crimes.  Stocktonia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Astronaut Jose Hernandez high-fived about 800 5th graders from schools around San Joaquin County during the Science Blast STEAAM Initiative on April 17 at the Spanos Center on the University of the Pacific campus as part of a program sponsored by his Reaching for the Stars Foundation.  The Stockton Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the City Council voted 7-0 to give Gospel Center Rescue Mission $150,000 from leftover discretionary funds for its New Life Program and to install shelter cameras—other local nonprofits have said they did not receive the same notice about funding. Council members did not comment further on whether similar opportunities were available for other groups.  Stocktonia
  • Stockton Councilmember Michele Padilla missed her court date on April 10 for a hearing on her request for a restraining order against Rev. Ernest Williams and the judge dismissed the case with no prejudice, dissolving the temporary order (Padilla is 57 and Williams is 80). She said a work conflict and improved behavior at public meetings led her to skip the hearing, which made her feel that a restraining order was no longer needed.  The Stockton Record
