COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbus Park at 401 W. Worth St. closed on July 7 for complete renovations that will add a community garden, playground and swing area—restrooms, picnic shelter, public art, adult fitness area, basketball courts, ADA pathway and lighting improvements. Stockbridge General Contracting began work using a $3.35 million Proposition 68 grant, and construction is expected to finish by spring 2026.  The Stockton Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Stockton Food Bank suffered four fires in one month—two of which were arson incidents—and faced thousands of dollars in damages to donated items and property, prompting cleanup efforts and enhanced security measures.  Stocktonia
  • On Thursday, Stockton police responded just after 3 p.m. to the 300 block of San Carlos Way where they found a 60-year-old man stabbed — he was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while a suspect was detained as the investigation continued.  KCRA
  • On July 13, about 36 of nearly 40 peacocks disappeared from the Ryde Hotel in Walnut Grove after a customer spotted two men with a cage in a pickup—staff said the loss made the hotel very quiet—and police are checking off-camera evidence while management—who have long cared for the birds—will upgrade security before replacing them.  The Stockton Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At a Monday meeting, Stockton port commissioners canceled the planned hydrogen plant after environmental groups argued the project would produce dirty hydrogen and worsen air quality. BayoTech, the company behind the proposal (which must complete an environmental impact report before building at a new site), did not comment further.  Stocktonia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln said he will run against Rep. Josh Harder for the 9th Congressional District seat in the 2026 election. He lost by a small number last time and focused on cutting crime and homelessness as mayor—Harder’s campaign said Lincoln let those problems grow.  The Stockton Record

HEALTH NEWS

  • HealthForce Partners California announced last week it will operate as an independent nonprofit to ease the healthcare workforce shortage by offering paid internships, scholarships and clinical supervision for local students. The group has supported over 80 internships and more than $1 million in scholarships while partnering with regional colleges and community organizations in Stockton and San Joaquin County — efforts aimed at addressing a gap that has grown over decades.  Stocktonia

MENTAL HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 24, Stockton expanded access to mental health, substance use and housing services with new initiatives funded by a national opioid settlement and federal COVID-era relief funds—officials said the measures will soon benefit residents.  Stocktonia
