CRIME NEWS

  • Southbound traffic on I-5 is being diverted off at Louise Avenue since 12:51 a.m. as law enforcement investigates a shooting in Lathrop—drivers should use other routes with no clear reopening time given.  KCRA
  • The CHP closed parts of I-5 through Lathrop early Thursday after launching an investigation into a reported shooting involving a CHP officer—drivers were redirected onto alternative routes and the Louise onramp was closed until lanes were set to reopen around 8 a.m.  Stocktonia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After a nine-week break, nearly 40,000 students returned to class on Thursday at 55 Stockton Unified schools — families arrived early at Spanos Elementary with some reaching the campus by 7:30 a.m. The district will enforce a new cellphone policy for the 2025-26 school year — phones must be stored during class to help students stay focused.  The Stockton Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stockton City Council unanimously approved the use of city-issued tablets with limited functions for closed session meetings after a grand jury report led to a ban on electronic devices; the new rules allow the tablets to display city documents (without external communication) and must remain in the closed session room.  Stocktonia
  • Tuesday, Stockton City Council approved a $154,804 purchase of two heavy-duty Chevy Silverado pickups for police to move belongings of unhoused people and to support clean-ups after clearing the Trinity Park encampment on July 22—tasks including returning shopping carts and towing boats. One local resident questioned if the funds could be better used to provide services for the unhoused.  Stocktonia
  • Stockton City Council replaced interim city manager Steve Colangelo when Deputy City Manager Will Crew is reappointed effective Aug. 9 — Mayor Christina Fugazi clarified that Colangelo was not fired or relieved of his duties. The council will vote on a new interim contract on Aug. 19 as it continues the search for a permanent city manager.  The Stockton Record
  • The city of Stockton is accepting applications for its Stocked Full of Produce Grant Program—grant funds up to $15,000 are available to help corner and convenience stores upgrade infrastructure for healthier food options. Eligible businesses in targeted areas must hold a valid city business license and apply through the Neighborly application portal.  The Stockton Record
  • Stockton Fire Chief Bryan Carr told the city council that unsafe pallet storage worsened fires and proposed a new ordinance that requires pallets to be kept within 10 feet of a building behind a locked gate—allowing unsupervised storage for up to 90 minutes. Councilmembers Enriquez, Padilla and Vice Mayor Jason Lee discussed the proposal as a step to help reduce fire risks at key local establishments.  Stocktonia
