Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
Good morning, Stockton.
USDA budget cuts removed key funds for food programs and the Stockton Emergency Food Bank lost 500 cases of nonperishable food each week.
More than 83,000 people in San Joaquin County face food insecurity and the food bank will host a fundraiser on April 29 to raise $10,000—community leaders ask for more help.
On April 16, California officials announced that an invasive Asian mussel species was found in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta which may harm plants, fish, and water flow.
The state set up the Golden Mussel Task Force—comprising departments like Fish and Wildlife and State Parks—to inspect boats, offer grants, and teach operators cleaning techniques to stop its spread.
California’s drought has led to hot, dry conditions that will worsen air quality as dust storms and allergens are expected to increase this spring—meteorologists say Southern California will bear the brunt while Stockton and other parts of the Central Valley may also face rising respiratory issues.
Officials in San Joaquin County held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to start the Lower San Joaquin River Project—a billion-dollar plan to reduce flood risk for about 264,000 residents.
The first phase is expected to finish by the end of 2026, and later work will help lower flood insurance costs for 100,000 homes as the project is set to complete in 2039.
The aging levees in the Delta that protect Stockton and nearby towns are at risk because state and federal funds have not kept up—local groups must borrow money for repairs that could cost at least $3 billion by 2050.
Farmers and officials warn that if funding does not improve soon, debt and delays in fixing the levees will leave homes, farms and water supplies in danger.
Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center has brought together community leaders (service providers, researchers and law enforcement) to study how reducing violence might help people experiencing homelessness in Stockton.
The group will increase data collection, offer secured lockers and provide training to boost safety and cut emergency spending.
