Adam Lopez, 39, was arraigned Monday after he allegedly set a probation officer on fire in downtown Stockton with a gasoline can and lighter on Thursday — he faces charges of attempted murder, attempted arson of an inhabited structure, and resisting an executive officer by force that could earn him at least 50 years in prison and is held without bail with his next court date scheduled for July 25.

Republic Services workers remain on strike and Stockton officials announced a revised trash collection schedule that delays pickups by two or more days; residents with Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday service days should remove recycling and organics from their curb and call Republic Services at (209) 466-3604 if trash is not collected as scheduled.

Stockton City Council’s agenda shows it may change its city manager after a Tuesday closed session discussed disciplining a public employee and then immediately appointing a new one—moves that echo earlier changes in leadership.

The meeting will also address shutting down an ad hoc committee set to recommend candidates, a step that could limit the choices for a permanent manager expected by early August.

County officials reported that more than 80% of mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus were found in Tracy—prompting them to advise residents to remove standing water and use EPA-registered repellents as monitoring continues.
