  • On July 15, Stockton residents saw trash pile up on curbs as negotiations between Republic Services and Teamsters Local 439 led to a strike that disrupted weekly waste pickups in six city districts—officials reported that about 40 local strikers and over 600 additional union members joined picket lines across the region.  The Stockton Record

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was killed and another injured in a shooting at a CrossFit gym in north Stockton around 7:58 a.m. Thursday on the 800 block of West Eight Mile Road as homicide detectives began investigating the case.  The Stockton Record
  • Masked Border Patrol agents raided a Home Depot parking lot on Florin Road in Sacramento County at 7:47 a.m. Thursday after a 911 call, and a woman said her husband— a U.S. citizen—was taken while day laborers at the scene reported about 10 arrests and his phone later showed him near San Juan Avenue in Stockton.  KCRA
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested about 10 people—including mostly day laborers and a U.S. citizen—at a Sacramento Home Depot and jailed them at its Stockton office on July 17th, according to an immigration lawyer.  Stocktonia

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The California Fish and Game Commission said the white sturgeon count in the Delta has fallen from about 150,000 in the 1990s to around 19,000 today due to an algae bloom, poaching and poor river conditions. A meeting next month will decide if the catch-and-release gamefish should be listed as threatened under the state’s Endangered Species Act — researchers plan to continue surveys to monitor the decline.  Stocktonia
