  • San Joaquin County is holding 23 free food distributions in August for residents who meet income guidelines, with sites across Stockton, Tracy, Lodi, and nearby areas. The first event is today at the Lodi Salvation Army from 9 to 11 a.m., and attendees must self-certify eligibility & bring their own bag as items may run out early.  The Stockton Record

CRIME NEWS

  • A nurse at the state health care facility in Stockton is accused of sexual abuse by three inmates who say he touched them in ways that went past a normal exam— his legal team denies any abuse as the cases move through court.  KCRA
  • Stockton police said a 22-year-old man died after possibly falling down an elevator shaft during a reported burglary when officers arrived at a building at North Aurora and East Oak streets around 1 a.m. Tuesday—he was found with severe injuries and died at the scene.  KCRA
  • A Stockton man was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Monday for his role in a large-scale meth ring that sent 50 pounds to Nebraska and 21 pounds to Pennsylvania, federal prosecutors said.  Stocktonia

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stockton Maritime Museum plans a new downtown site featuring a reproduction of the historic Colberg Boat Works building and tours of the restored USS Lucid, which is currently tied up on the San Joaquin River near Louis Park. The project will include a 5,000-square-foot upstairs event space—expected to host fundraisers, weddings, and school trips—while officials plan to apply for federal grants and raise additional funds.  Stocktonia

  • Stockton Unified School District is hosting a free back-to-school resource fair at Edison High School this Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.—local vendors, nonprofits and food trucks will offer resource booths and workshops for parents and students. SUSD Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez said the event supports the whole child—1500 backpacks with school supplies will be given away.  KCRA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stockton city officials are working to stabilize payroll operations and improve internal controls after delays, system errors, and a missed tax deadline. A forensic payroll audit will start within 30 days—external auditors are meeting on-site today and tomorrow while the city pursues a new chief financial officer with interviews planned for mid-October.  Stocktonia
  • City officials and street vendors plan a new ordinance to update Stockton’s code and follow state law. After the May 16 death of 60-year-old vendor Ignacio Garcia, talks include safety checks and permit rules—meant to protect both vendors and customers.  Stocktonia
  • The Stockton city manager opened an investigation after $50,000 from the city's risk mitigation fund was used without his approval for the Wild 'N Out event on May 24, with officials checking who authorized the funds and if city procedures were bypassed + Vice Mayor Jason Lee has called the decision a conspiracy. Interim City Manager Steve Colangelo said the probe will ensure transparency and accountability in how public funds are spent.  KCRA
