CRIME NEWS

  • Two people were hospitalized after separate assaults during the weekend in Stockton’s Seaport District—one woman hit while breaking up a fight on South Airport Way around 10:30 p.m. Saturday and an 18-year-old man stabbed on Georgia Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Sunday—with both injuries reported as non-life-threatening and no arrests made.  Stocktonia
  • A 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting early Monday morning in Stockton when gunfire hit him on East Harding Way at about 3:05 a.m.—he was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive while police have not released any suspect details.  Stocktonia

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hungry roof rats invaded almond groves in San Joaquin County, damaging trees, equipment, and reducing nut yields on 100,000 acres with losses estimated up to $310 million. Growers are using poison bait and snap traps to fight the infestation—despite the high costs and labor-intensive efforts.  Stocktonia

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 17, 2020, 38 separate lightning fires ignited in California and merged to form the August Complex—recording over 1 million acres burned and prolonged poor air quality. Fire agencies now use sensor networks to quickly locate lightning strikes and improve wildfire detection and response.  KCRA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lathrop city manager Stephen Salvatore criticized RTD for its expanded transit service, saying that some bus lines cost nearly $359 per ride due to very low use—he proposed forming a technical advisory committee to review the district’s operations.  Stocktonia
