CRIME NEWS

  • Stockton truck driver Harjinder Singh made an illegal U-turn on a Florida highway that caused a fatal crash killing three people, and his attorney said he showed remorse by quickly assisting a minivan victim — later, Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins escorted him back to Florida.  KCRA
  • A green bench honoring Helen Keller installed on June 28 at the Maya Angelou Branch Library has been missing for over a week after being stolen in south Stockton—community members and San Joaquin Lions Club representatives are asking the public for help while police search for any suspects without camera evidence.  The Stockton Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school juniors in Stockton who will be seniors next school year can now apply for a spot on the California State Board of Education—applicants must attend Sacramento meetings and a conference from Nov. 3–5 with travel, lodging, and meals covered, and completed applications must be received by Sept. 19. This position will allow the student to serve as a voting board member for one year.  Stocktonia
  • Stanislaus State is thinking about opening a new campus in Tracy as part of the Pacific Gateway development which sits on 66 acre near Interstate 580 and Highway 132. If approved, the school will break ground by late 2026 and open the campus in 2028—offering courses in business, agriculture, cybersecurity and more.  Stocktonia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A council committee at City Hall on Monday reviewed plans to address two recommendations from a Grand Jury report that found the city lacked transparency and faced a hostile work environment—one plan would require quick disclosure of Brown Act violation findings and the other would examine the Ethics Hotline. City Attorney Lori Asuncion said the proposal will move to the City Council's September agenda to meet a revised deadline of October 1.  Stocktonia
