  • Little Manila Rising hosted its 4th annual Youth Convention at Delta College last Saturday—youth led workshops and interactive activities that celebrated Stockton's history and strengthened community voices.  Stocktonia

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Claire's is set to close over 45 stores in California, including one in Stockton, as part of its bankruptcy process after selling its North American operations to private equity firm Ames Watson for $104 million. The closures will occur on a rolling basis+ store closing sales continue at some locations while final dates are not yet disclosed.  The Stockton Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Stockton truck driver, was arrested and extradited to Florida to face three counts of vehicular homicide following a fatal crash on Aug. 12th that killed three people—over 3 million people signed an online petition for clemency as federal officials examine his immigration status.  Stocktonia

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Stockton woman became a millionaire overnight after winning a $1,008,054 jackpot on a Wheel of Fortune slot machine at Westgate Las Vegas Resort — she played for 15 minutes and spent $100 before a $5 spin landed the win on Aug 22. The famous casino, known for hosting Elvis Presley, is celebrating the lucky win as a notable break for her.  The Stockton Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dozens of protests are planned across California on Sept. 1 as part of the Workers Over Billionaires movement—where demonstrators will challenge billionaire policies and corporate control. Local organizers and unions promise events in Stockton and other cities to call for more public investment in services.  The Stockton Record
  • Stockton is hiring a new diversity, equity and inclusion consultant following months of controversy over DEI spending and management changes. The city issued a request for proposals last week with submissions due by Oct. 2 (proposal deadline) while a council investigation into diverted DEI funds continues.  Stocktonia

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal health officials warned Stockton residents to avoid certain eggs after nearly 100 people in 14 states, including 73 in California, became sick from salmonella. The recalled eggs—sold under the brand names Nagatoshi, Misuho, and Nijiya Markets with code CA-7695 and sell-by dates from July 1 through Sept. 18—were distributed in California and Nevada between June 16 and July 9, and consumers are advised to discard them.  KCRA
