  • A new report shows that if Stockton nonprofits closed for one day, more than 500 families would lose food support and emergency rooms would become crowded—over 20,000 jobs could vanish while our local economy loses over $1 billion, showing how important these groups are to our community.  Stocktonia
  • Dr. Elizabeth Blanchard was named Stocktonian of the Year for her decades of work as a Port of Stockton commissioner, a San Joaquin Delta College commissioner and a leader in local cultural groups. CRIME NEWS

  • Gov. Gavin Newsom commuted Arthur Battle’s sentence for a 2006 murder-for-hire when Battle was 18, making him eligible for parole after 19 years at Stockton’s California Health Care Facility & Newsom said the clemency rewards Battle’s commitment to education and helping other inmates.  KCRA
  • An 18-year-old man was shot near Albany and Astor drives in the Valley Oak District at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday evening and was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries—police have not identified the shooter.  Stocktonia
  • A 68-year-old woman died in an alleged hit-and-run when she was struck at about 4:40 a.m. near Stanislaus and Jackson streets in South Stockton on Sunday morning—officers say a man and a woman fled on foot after the collision.  Stocktonia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders expressed cautious optimism during today’s audit committee meeting as they reviewed updates on payroll operations, recruitment for a new CFO, and an efficiency study of the Administrative Services Department. Deputy City Manager Chad Reed and HR representative Maya Rift reported fixes that reduced CalPERS errors from 900 to 79, and interviews for the new CFO will begin on September 9—boosting confidence in the city’s progress.  Stocktonia
