Good morning, Stockton. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 12th of September.
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ San Joaquin County added $15 million more to fix an old downtown office building for the District Attorney’s office, pushing total costs to $73.5 million — county officials say cost overruns from poor planning are the cause. They worry that more money may be needed if project management does not improve — supervisors call for tighter controls. Stocktonia
- ➤ Gov. Gavin Newsom attempted to fast-track a $20 billion tunnel project to move more water south from the Delta, but lawmakers delayed his plan as critics warned it would harm local communities and the environment—Stockton lawmaker Jerry McNerney said the delay was welcome. Stocktonia
- ➤ San Joaquin County voted Tuesday to move forward with a new 1.5% wine tax on every bottle to fund marketing efforts for Lodi wineries — the tax is estimated to add 30 cents to a $20 bottle and raise $630,000 annually. Critics say the measure may burden struggling businesses — while supporters believe it will help sustain the local industry, with the first public hearing set for Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. at the county administration building. - ➤ Nearly 20 years after planning a new City Hall, officials have spent over $75 million on the project as contracts rose from $42 million to about $62 million, yet the city still uses the old building. The Stocktonia investigation showed that many change orders raised costs without full council review and have delayed moving into the new building. Stocktonia
