- ➤ San Joaquin County's Food For You program is hosting 22 free food distributions in October for residents who meet income guidelines. - ➤ On Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Stockton will host an event titled 'Is Hip-Hop America’s Biggest Success Story?' where hip-hop executives Tara DeVeaux and Detavio Samuels will discuss the genre’s economic impact while Robeson Taj Frazier moderates; a reception with live music will follow at Banner Island Ballpark and the event will stream online. - ➤ Head Start services will become more accessible for low-income families as the University Park Head Start facility begins full operations soon at the Stanislaus State Stockton Campus. The center, built in partnership between CAPK and the San Joaquin County Office of Education, can serve up to 64 children from 6 months to 5 years — offering education, nutrition and family support — after a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 30. - ➤ Stockton police have been without a new labor contract for four months since the previous deal ended on June 30 — city spokesperson Tony Mannor said union and city officials continue confidential negotiations and may use outside arbitrators if talks stall. Stocktonia
- ➤ A new bill AB 268 passed by the State Senate and Assembly will make Diwali an official state holiday if signed by Governor Newsom—allowing state employees paid time off and some public schools to close.
