Good morning, Stockton. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 16th of August.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 540 to link the state’s power grid with other Western markets—this could involve both clean and fossil fuel sources to help reduce high electricity costs and maintain grid stability. Gov. Newsom and state Sen. Becker back the proposal, while critics caution that the plan may raise fossil fuel use outside the state.  Stocktonia
  • San Joaquin County supervisors created an ad hoc committee to review the county's flag policy after controversy over a previous Pride flag request. Supervisors Mario Gardea and Sonny Dhaliwal will work with others to return recommendations at a future meeting (the committee was approved in a 4-1 vote).  Stocktonia
  • The Stockton City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday night to open two police substations in South Stockton—one in the Sierra Vista Housing Authority building at 1648 E. 12th St and the other in the Weston Ranch shopping center. The new stations will each have two officers and add about $150,000 to $170,000 to annual costs while aiming to strengthen community policing.  Stocktonia
  • Over the past eight months, Stockton cycled through a permanent manager, multiple interims and a consultant hired without council approval—actions that spurred spending investigations; Deputy City Manager Will Crew now leads as the council begins recruiting a permanent leader with applications due Sept. 5 and interviews scheduled for Oct. 6—7.  Stocktonia
